How to Throw Away Garbage Near Taipei Main Station | Huayin Street Guide
Taipei has no street bins. You literally chase a musical garbage truck. Here's everything you need to know about trash disposal near Taipei Main Station — truck schedule, recycling rules, and where to buy the mandatory blue bags.

First Things First: Try Not to Bring Food Home
Before we get into garbage rules, here's the most practical tip for guests staying at Nuanwoo: try to finish your food outside.
Food waste (kitchen scraps) in Taipei requires special handling — it must be drained, separated, and cannot be mixed with regular trash. And since garbage trucks don't come every day, leftover food sitting in your room on a Sunday or Wednesday isn't fun for anyone.
Taipei Main Station has incredible food everywhere. Eat out, come back happy, no garbage headaches.

Welcome to Taiwan's Unique Garbage Culture
Here's something no travel guide prepares you for: in Taiwan, you chase the garbage truck.
There are no dumpsters. No bins on the sidewalk. Instead, a yellow garbage truck drives through your neighborhood playing classical music — usually Beethoven's "Für Elise" or "A Maiden's Prayer." When you hear the music, you grab your trash and run outside to hand it directly to the truck crew.
Yes, it's exactly as wild as it sounds. And yes, locals do it in pajamas.
1. Blue Designated Bags (Required)
Regular trash in Taipei must go in official "blue designated garbage bags" (專用垃圾袋). The truck will refuse trash in any other bag.
Where to buy:
- 7-ELEVEN, FamilyMart, or any convenience store
- Look for the "Designated Garbage Bag Sales" sign
- Smallest size costs just a few dozen NT$
💡 Money-saving tip: Shopping bags from convenience stores and supermarkets in Taipei are "dual-purpose bags" (環保兩用袋). After using them to carry groceries, you can use them as garbage bags. So when you buy snacks at 7-ELEVEN, pay the NT$1-2 for a bag — it doubles as your trash bag later.
2. Recycling by Day
Taipei separates recycling by category on different days:
Monday & Friday — Flat items
- Clean old clothes
- Paper, newspapers
- Clean plastic bags
- Old books
Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday — 3D items
- Styrofoam
- General recyclables
- Bottles and cans (PET, aluminum, glass)
Any day — Special items
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- CDs/DVDs
3. Food Waste
If you have food scraps:
- Drain the liquid before disposal
- Put it in the kitchen waste bucket next to the truck (not in your garbage bag)
- No plastic bags in the food waste
- Never mix food waste with regular trash
This is exactly why we recommend eating out — handling food waste is a hassle.
The Simple Version for Nuanwoo Guests
Too many rules? Here's all you really need to know:
- Eat out — it's easier and the food near Taipei Station is amazing
- Rinse bottles & cans and put them in the recycling area
- Regular trash goes in blue bags (or convenience store bags)
- Around 5:15 PM, Mon-Sat (except Wed) — take your bag to Huayin Street and wait for the truck
- Sun & Wed — no truck, keep your trash until tomorrow
If you're confused, just ask your Nuanwoo host. We'll help you sort it out. Garbage disposal is genuinely one of the biggest culture shocks for visitors in Taiwan 😄
