Taipei Main Station is massive and confusing. Where do you store your bags? How much does it cost? This is the complete guide to coin lockers, staffed storage, and every luggage option around Taipei's biggest transit hub.

Coin lockers at Taipei Main Station

Your Luggage Problem, Solved

You just arrived at Taipei Main Station — Taiwan's biggest transit hub where the MRT, Taiwan Railway (TRA), High Speed Rail (THSR), and intercity buses all converge. You've got a suitcase, a backpack, and a full day of sightseeing ahead.

The good news: Taipei Main Station has over 30 locker banks spread across multiple floors. The bad news: the station is enormous and notoriously confusing — even locals get lost.

This guide tells you exactly where to go, how much it costs, and what to watch out for.

Option 1: Coin Lockers (Most Common)

Electronic coin lockers are everywhere in Taipei Main Station. No reservation needed — just find an empty one and use it.

Where Are the Lockers?

💡 Nuanwoo tip: We're right next to Exit R1. The closest lockers to us are at the B1 Zhongshan Underground Mall entrance — a 2-minute walk.

Sizes & Prices

Taipei Main Station offers 7 locker sizes, from tiny compartments for daypacks to full-size units that fit a 29-inch suitcase:

SizeFitsPrice (per 3 hours)
MiniSmall backpack, handbagNT$20-30
Small (37×32×57 cm)20-inch carry-onNT$30-40
Medium24-inch suitcaseNT$50
Large26-28 inch suitcaseNT$70
Extra Large (90×90×40 cm)29-inch suitcaseNT$110

That's roughly US$0.60 to US$3.40 per 3 hours — very affordable compared to most countries.

Payment Methods

You don't need coins! Most lockers now accept:

  • EasyCard / iPASS (tap-to-pay transit cards — the easiest option)
  • Mobile payments: LINE Pay, Taiwan Pay, Alipay, WeChat Pay, and more
  • Coins: NT$10 and NT$50 accepted

💡 Pro tip: Get an EasyCard at any convenience store (NT$100 deposit) — it works for MRT, buses, lockers, and most convenience store purchases. It's the single most useful thing you can buy in Taiwan.

Operating Hours

This is the part most travelers miss:

  • MRT station lockers: ~06:00 – 00:00 (matches MRT hours)
  • TRA/THSR area lockers: 07:00 – 00:00
  • Underground mall lockers: 11:00 – 22:00

⚠️ Lockers are NOT 24 hours! If you store your bag at 11 PM and your locker closes at midnight, you can't get it back until the next morning. Items left over 24 hours may be relocated — you'll need to call to retrieve them.

How to Use

  1. Find an empty locker (screen shows "Available" / 空櫃)
  2. Place your luggage inside and close the door
  3. Select your locker number on the touchscreen
  4. Choose payment method (EasyCard, mobile pay, or coins)
  5. After payment, the machine prints a password receipt — keep this!
  6. To retrieve: enter the password at the same machine to open your locker

🔑 Do NOT lose the password receipt. Take a photo of it immediately. If lost, call (02) 2725-3996 — it's a hassle to resolve.

Option 2: Staffed Luggage Storage (For Large Bags or Busy Days)

During holidays and peak travel seasons, every locker in Taipei Main Station can be full by late morning. Alternatives:

Several businesses near the station offer luggage storage with real people:

  • Large bag (over 26 inches): ~NT$100 / 3 hrs, ~NT$400 / 24 hrs
  • Advantage: Reservable, always available, handles oversized items

Practical Tips

  1. Go early on holidays: Lockers fill up fast on weekends and national holidays. Aim for before 11 AM.
  2. Pay with EasyCard: No coins needed, works on almost every machine.
  3. Photo your locker location: Taipei Main Station is a maze. Take a photo of the locker area and number so you can find it again.
  4. Photo the password receipt: Your only backup if the paper gets lost.
  5. Watch the clock: Underground mall lockers close at 10 PM — don't leave retrieval too late.
  6. Check availability online: Taipei Metro's website shows real-time locker availability (updates every 3-5 minutes).

FAQ

Q: Will my 29-inch suitcase fit? Yes, but only in the large/extra-large lockers (90×90×40 cm). These are limited — on busy days, get there early.

Q: Can I store luggage overnight? Technically yes, but lockers aren't accessible after closing time (midnight or 10 PM depending on location). Items left over 24 hours incur extra charges. Over 30 days = disposed of.

Q: What can't I store? Fresh food, flammable items, and hazardous materials. Normal luggage and personal items are fine.

Q: Do I need to go outside to reach the lockers? No — Taipei Main Station is entirely connected underground. From Nuanwoo, you can walk to the lockers without stepping outside, even in the rain.
